âI know what happened on the Afterglow shoot,â I said after he poured a glass of iced tea for me and weâd made a round of polite conversation.
Charles turned away. He opened a cabinet as if to get something out of it, but when he turned back around, he was empty-handed. He hesitated a moment before sitting down on a stool at the kitchen counter.
He put a hand over his mouth and stared at the empty space on the counter. When he looked back up, the corners of his mouth were upturned and he looked like he was about to start laughing. He finally spoke, his voice clear. âIâm not going to act like I know what thatâs supposed to mean.â
I leaned against the wall, putting my weight on my good foot. âYou know, I actually like you, Charles. As a person, I mean. I think we understand each other. Now, I donât like Margy nearly as much, but Iâm giving you a chance to tell me what happened before I print it.â
I watched him closely as he processed what I was saying. The man was not a strong improviserâheâd confessed as much to me after his debacle at the charity event a week earlier. Actors usually have one feature they rely on when theyâre performing. For Charles, it was his dark, expressive eyebrows. Which proved useful, given that most of his roles required very little speech. His brow was drawn in tightly when I first spoke, then rose when I mentioned Margy.
âI have no idea what youâre talking about,â he said, his voice getting slightly louder.
Iâd seen a lot of actors play the idiot with me before, but this was the first time Charles had done it. He wasnât especially convincing. But whatever he lacked in conviction, he more than made up for in intimidation. He sat with his elbows on the counter, squared up to broaden his shoulders. He didnât stand or even shift toward me; everything in his posture signaled a brute defensiveness.
I told him to call if he changed his mind.
